Anxiety is a normal phenomenon. Think of 5 minutes before you have gone into an examination hall or attending an interview or making a presentation! Heart pounding, dry mouth and sweaty palms are experienced by everyone from time to time. But when anxiety makes you lose sleep, affect your Attention and Concentration, affect your performance and in the process damage your confidence, It is time to seek help. In certain extreme scenarios, it becomes the cause of job loss or marital discord.
Different types of Anxiety:
The physical signs of anxiety are racing pulse, sweaty palms, dry mouth and poor attention and concentration. The psychological features of anxiety are “negative automatic thoughts”. They’re “Negative” in that they tend to hinder the person’s motivation and ability to engage with activities, and contribute to emotional problems. They’re “Automatic” in that they seem to occur “just like that”, popping into the person’s head as if from nowhere. The combination of physical and psychological features of anxiety results in individuals sometime avoiding anxiety provoking situations altogether; although this results in temporary relief over time the individual has learnt that avoidance works for anxiety management which results in increasing avoidance behaviour. Unfortunately sometime people resort to using substances like alcohol to cope with anxiety, this again results only in temporary relief with an increase in anxiety when the substance is not available or cannot be used.
In the majority of cases of anxiety, psychological interventions help an individual substantially. In therapy the person identifies the triggering and maintaining factors of anxiety to break out from the vicious cycle. Once these are addressed and positive life changes are incorporated there is a reduction in symptoms and improvement in overall well-being.
